Donation Policy:

The South Jefferson Public Library welcomes donations of books, audiovisual materials, and other items as well as monetary contributions each year. These gifts help enrich and improve the library’s resources.

Material Donations

The library will receive donations of most types of materials. The library reserves the right to accept, decline, discard, recycle, or sell any donations.

All materials donated will be evaluated by the staff to determine which materials to add to the collection. Donations must be outright and unconditional.

Acceptable Items, if in good condition:

  • Adult and children’s fiction books
  • Adult and children’s non-fiction books, if information not outdated
  • Compact discs and DVDs as long as in their original packaging

Non-Acceptable Items:

  • College text and school books
  • Reader’s Digest condensed books
  • National Geographic magazines
  • Encyclopedias
  • Any item that is outdated, condensed, musty, moldy, yellowed, soiled or damaged.

Items not added will be sold at the library’s annual book sale to acquire funds to purchase new items, transferred to other institutions, discarded or recycled.

The library and/or its staff are not permitted to place a value on donations for tax purposes. A receipt will be given stating how many items donated.

Financial Donations

Monetary contributions to the library are greatly appreciated and welcomed. Donors can earmark their contribution for specific materials, supplies, equipment, or furnishings according to the library’s needs. Other contributions received may suggest the funds be used for purposes the library decrees is most useful.

Other donations

The library director will refer decisions on all equipment, art, benches, or other unusual donations to the Board of Trustees for consideration. Any items donated, which may require maintenance through the years, will be the responsibility of the donor to maintain.
